Exciting progress on the construction of our new school campus

Construction update since the groundbreaking in January

A lot has happened on our new school campus since construction began on January 18th.

A lot has also changed since the first aerial photo on April 21, 2021, was taken.

The construction work on the new school campus is making great progress, as can be seen in the aerial photo from May 27th. Individual parts of the building are already recognizable in the shell.

From the future drop-off and pick-up zone, which is a part of the campus area, the ground floor exterior walls of the entrance area can be seen which have already been set up. The basement below is already completely finished. To the right of this are the pillars that will support the outer walls of the auditorium-cafeteria area.

Looking westwards from the entrance area one can see the shell of the sports hall, where individual outer walls have already been erected. The mounds of earth in front of the sports hall lie in the area of the future auditorium and cafeteria.

Standing in the sports hall, the northwest-facing windows and the outlets for the emergency exits of the individual parts of the hall can be seen.

The foundations for the learning house West are currently being poured. Extensive preparatory work was necessary here, as the building section will have two kitchens – the cafeteria kitchen and a separate kitchen for the Vincerola Montessori Day Nursery. For the kitchens, extensive preparatory underground installation work was necessary before work on the foundation could begin.

The shell of the first floor has already been completed for the learning house west. The picture shows the situation on May 27, 2021. In the meantime, the ceiling of the building section has already been poured, so that the construction of the 1st floor can begin.

The interior is still characterized by numerous supports that hold the newly cast ceiling. In the entrance area, which will contain central elements such as toilets, tea kitchens and technical rooms, there is already a cross support that will hold the future main staircase of the building section.

A characteristic element of the learning modules on our new school campus are the atria in the middle of the building, which provide the inside of the building with light. There will be smaller learning rooms that are suitable for group work or individual discussions. They have large windows facing the atrium.

In the northern part of the learning house there is a second staircase, which can be used to access the boarding school on the 2nd floor.

In front of the learning house east is the school yard and the school forest with numerous play, sport, relaxation and learning opportunities. The entrance area can be seen from behind in the background.

Two of the existing trees will provide shade in the schoolyard.

An emergency route for the fire brigade will be created on the eastern border of the new school campus, which will also serve as a running track for sports activities. A jump pit at the end of the track allows flexible use.

Amazon Jungle

Throughout February, 2024, 25 of our CIS students embarked on a long journey to the Amazon Jungle in Iquitos, Peru. Students worked hard the previous months to raise funds to be able to create their community service project with the local communities of El Chino in the Tahuayo Region of the Amazon basin. Once there, our 25 students, along with our three teachers and the guides at the lodge they stayed in, participated in a whole day community service project where students built two complete Primary School classrooms. Our students built 20 desks and 20 chairs from scratch with the help of the local community and finished the day by putting the new furniture inside the classrooms. Thanks to this initiative, the students were able to fill up two classrooms that are now providing full day education to the children of the community. At CIS, one of our pillars of excellent education is understanding the privilege that comes with being an IB student and an international school student, and the importance of being global citizens. With this, comes the responsibility of being stewards of the communities that inhabit this world and the importance of giving back and being change makers!
