IFK/CIS Boarding House

Our boarding house offers young people who do not have family in the surrounding area the possibility to successfully complete their school career at COLOGNE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL – Internationale Friedensschule Köln. In addition to receiving an excellent bilingual education, students develop a solid foundation for respectful coexistence within a lively, international environment.

FEELS LIKE HOME

We accept a maximum of 16 students, providing them with a small, cosmopolitan living group with a family-like character. Social pedagogues live in the boarding house together with students, providing for care and supervision around the clock. Each young person is appointed two pedagogues as their direct mentors, who take special care of the student’s questions, needs and concerns.

Between 8:00am and 4:00pm, students are at school for lessons as well as extracurricular activities. Outside of this time, they can arrange for learning support. We organise exciting and stimulating trips for our boarders, where they can experience the unique culture of Cologne through theater, art or sports events. At our weekly meetings, students have the chance to propose leisure time activities and trips, which we can then plan together. In these meetings, we also discuss duties and any other topics of interest or concern.

Evening meals provide a further opportunity for group discussions, as dinner is eaten together. During the week, dinner delivered fresh to the boarding house each day; on the weekends, pupils and pedagogues can cook meals independently.

Our boarding house community is international, with students joining us from all corners of the world. In order to be fair to everyone, we ask that all group discussions be held in German or in English.

Facilities

Our modern, light, purpose-built boarding house was established in 2016, just a few minutes walking distance from COLOGNE INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL – Internationale Friedensschule Köln. Up to 16 pupils live in 3-person or 4-person furnished apartments, all equipped with W-Lan to make research, homework, and communication with family and friends back home possible. Living arrangements are separated by gender. The apartments are on the 3rd floor and can be accessed by elevator or stairs. The large common room with an integrated kitchen provides space for cooking, eating, studying or just hanging out. Boarding students also have access to the school sports hall outside of the regular school times, should they want to play a game of basketball, badminton or soccer.

Pedagogical Concept

Our boarding house is a place where young people of different nationalities and cultures live side by side. In our daily co-existence, students experience an exciting range of cultures, opinions and values and have the opportunity to develop multicultural friendships.

In order to form a community from a diverse group of individuals, each member must bring with them openness, reliability, respect and dedication. The diversity of perspectives in our community is extremely enriching, but it also requires great social and emotional competencies. We encourage the development of these values through lively exchanges at the boarding house, ensuring that we are always maintaining a democratic framework. Each boarder also contributes to the well-being of the community by assuming responsibility for a duty.

In guided discussions and interactions with our experienced pedagogues, students learn to develop and advocate their convictions and to view themselves and their peers as equals within the community – crucial key competencies for the globalised world of tomorrow.
