Designed for International Families

Families relocating to the Bonn and Cologne region often face many changes at once. At Cologne International School, our community is built around students who come from international backgrounds, making transitions smoother and more supportive for new families.

Learning Environment in English and German

Our Primary School offers a fully bilingual program, with all subjects taught in English and German, allowing students to develop their German language skills naturally alongside their academic learning.

In Secondary School, instruction continues primarily in English, with German as a core subject, giving students the opportunity to further strengthen their German proficiency while pursuing an international curriculum.

Experience Supporting International Students

Students at CIS represent more than 50 nationalities, and many families have experienced international relocation. Teachers and staff understand the challenges of transition and help new students settle quickly into school life.

Language Support and Local Integration

While the academic program is delivered in English, secondary school students also have the opportunity to develop German language skills through our DaF Club, which prepares students for the Goethe Certificate. This allows international students to integrate into life in Germany while maintaining access to global university pathways.

A Global Learning Environment

The curriculum encourages international perspectives and cultural awareness. Activities such as Model United Nations, global study trips, and collaborative projects (e.g. Ghana, Madagascar, Peru, etc.)  connect students with issues and cultures around the world.

A Modern Learning Environment

At Cologne International School, students learn in a modern campus designed to support both academic focus and personal development. The campus, opened in 2022, provides a learning environment where students can collaborate, explore ideas, and develop the skills needed for an international future.

State-of-the-Art Campus

The CIS campus combines modern architecture with purpose-built learning spaces that support the International Baccalaureate curriculum. Classrooms, laboratories, and collaborative areas are designed to encourage inquiry, discussion, and creativity.

Spaces for Learning and Growth

Students have access to a wide range of facilities that support both academics and student life, including science labs, creative arts spaces, sports facilities, and areas designed for group collaboration and independent study.

Optional Boarding for Students

For families seeking additional flexibility, Cologne International School also offers a boarding house that provides a structured and supportive residential environment during the academic year.

A Thoughtful Approach to Technology

CIS promotes the responsible use of technology in learning. Students are encouraged to develop digital literacy while also maintaining strong interpersonal and critical thinking skills. To support focus and healthy habits, CIS is a smartphone-free school for students up to age 16.

A Strong Parent Community

At Cologne International School, families are an important part of school life. Our community includes parents from many countries who support one another as they settle into life in Germany and the school environment.

Amazon Jungle

Throughout February, 2024, 25 of our CIS students embarked on a long journey to the Amazon Jungle in Iquitos, Peru. Students worked hard the previous months to raise funds to be able to create their community service project with the local communities of El Chino in the Tahuayo Region of the Amazon basin. Once there, our 25 students, along with our three teachers and the guides at the lodge they stayed in, participated in a whole day community service project where students built two complete Primary School classrooms. Our students built 20 desks and 20 chairs from scratch with the help of the local community and finished the day by putting the new furniture inside the classrooms. Thanks to this initiative, the students were able to fill up two classrooms that are now providing full day education to the children of the community. At CIS, one of our pillars of excellent education is understanding the privilege that comes with being an IB student and an international school student, and the importance of being global citizens. With this, comes the responsibility of being stewards of the communities that inhabit this world and the importance of giving back and being change makers!
