Intern for the School Library (m/f/d)

Our school library is an open and vibrant space for students in Grades 1 to 12. The library is used by all age groups and sees itself as the school’s social hub: a place for reading, learning, researching, and working, as well as for exchanging ideas about books, media, and creative projects.

We are looking forward to an enthusiastic collaboration with someone who enjoys developing this space further together with our librarian.

Your task:

As an Intern in the School Library, you will actively contribute to the daily life and further development of the library as a central social and learning hub for students in Grades 1–12 at the international school in Cologne. • Co-design creative displays and seasonal decorations
  • Develop atmosphere-enhancing ideas without wall posters (mobile elements, table/window décor, ceiling hangings, flexible displays)
  • Create and support activities that promote reading motivation

User-Oriented Organization

  • Help structure genres and sections more clearly
  • Design new labels and alternative signage concepts
  • Create orientation aids (“Where can I find what?”) for all age groups
  • Reorganize popular sections such as graphic novels
  • Collect student feedback and student voice

LIBREJA – Learning Together

  • Gradually explore the full range of LIBREJA’s features beyond basic circulation
  • Set up friendly reminders and overdue notices
  • Improve genre classification and tagging
  • Develop simple statistics and practical workflows suitable for everyday use

Educational Support (Primary & Secondary)

  • Prepare and accompany class visits to the library

Communication & Publications

  • Write short articles about the library for the student newspaper Goat Gazette
  • Prepare announcements about new acquisitions, book recommendations, and reviews
  • Present new books via school platforms or a library newsletter
  • Possibly contribute to a regular library update

Individual Project

  • Develop and implement an individual project based on your interests (e.g. a multilingual corner, an event concept, or a design or media format)

Your profile:

  • You are a student in the field of library science, education, pedagogy, media studies, cultural studies, or a related field
  • You have a strong interest in books, media, and intercultural education
  • You enjoy collaboration, communication, and working with students of different age groups
  • You are creative, proactive, and have a hands-on mindset
  • You work reliably and in an organized manner
  • You have good German or English skills; additional languages are a plus

We offer:

  • A flexible internship (duration and workload by arrangement)
  • Personal mentoring and close exchange with the librarian
  • Insight into the work of an international school library
  • A supportive, appreciative, and collaborative working environment
  • Space for your own ideas and creative implementation
  • A vibrant, diverse school community

Amazon Jungle

Throughout February, 2024, 25 of our CIS students embarked on a long journey to the Amazon Jungle in Iquitos, Peru. Students worked hard the previous months to raise funds to be able to create their community service project with the local communities of El Chino in the Tahuayo Region of the Amazon basin. Once there, our 25 students, along with our three teachers and the guides at the lodge they stayed in, participated in a whole day community service project where students built two complete Primary School classrooms. Our students built 20 desks and 20 chairs from scratch with the help of the local community and finished the day by putting the new furniture inside the classrooms. Thanks to this initiative, the students were able to fill up two classrooms that are now providing full day education to the children of the community. At CIS, one of our pillars of excellent education is understanding the privilege that comes with being an IB student and an international school student, and the importance of being global citizens. With this, comes the responsibility of being stewards of the communities that inhabit this world and the importance of giving back and being change makers!
