JOB PURPOSE

The Instructional Assistant in Primary School Instrumental Music (String Instruments) supports the delivery of the school’s primary strings programme and assists students in developing foundational skills on string instruments such as violin, viola, and cello.

Working closely with the music teaching team, the role helps foster students’ musical development, confidence, enjoyment of ensemble playing, and engagement in instrumental learning within a positive and supportive environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the teaching and learning of string instruments within the primary school music programme.
  • Assist students during ensemble lessons, and performances.
  • Provide practical support to students in developing posture, bow hold, intonation, rhythm, music reading, and basic string technique.
  • Support students in establishing effective practice routines and building confidence as young musicians.
  • Help tune instruments and support the care, organisation, maintenance, and storage of string instruments and related materials.
  • Support classroom management and contribute to a positive, encouraging, and well-structured learning environment.
  • Encourage student participation, motivation, collaboration, and enjoyment in music-making.
  • Work collaboratively with music teachers and communicate professionally with colleagues and parents where appropriate.
  • Follow all school safeguarding, child protection, health, and safety procedures.

 

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Close collaboration with the teachers of the Music team
  • Working hours: Mondays and Fridays between 8:35 and 14:45, Wednesdays between 8:35-17:00. The exact working days and times will be specified in the schedule.
  • Total workload: up to 11 lessons (45 minutes each) per week, with preparation and follow-up (average throughout the year of 30 lessons per month)
  • Duration: 1 year contract
  • Employment type: Midi-Job (€26 per lesson)
  • Start date: 24 August 2026

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Music, Music Education, Instrumental Pedagogy, or a related field.
  • Previous experience teaching string instruments (e.g. violin, viola, cello) in school, small-group, or ensemble settings.
  • Safe and highly proficient playing ability on the violin or viola.
  • Native-level fluency in either English or German (spoken and written) and very good communication skills in the second language.
  • Enjoyment in supporting, guiding, and accompanying the learning and development of children and adolescents.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a positive, patient, and encouraging approach.
  • Interest in working collaboratively within an innovative and international school environment.
  • Openness to new ideas, reflective practice, and future-oriented educational approaches.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and willing to engage with new cultural and educational contexts.

Amazon Jungle

Throughout February, 2024, 25 of our CIS students embarked on a long journey to the Amazon Jungle in Iquitos, Peru. Students worked hard the previous months to raise funds to be able to create their community service project with the local communities of El Chino in the Tahuayo Region of the Amazon basin. Once there, our 25 students, along with our three teachers and the guides at the lodge they stayed in, participated in a whole day community service project where students built two complete Primary School classrooms. Our students built 20 desks and 20 chairs from scratch with the help of the local community and finished the day by putting the new furniture inside the classrooms. Thanks to this initiative, the students were able to fill up two classrooms that are now providing full day education to the children of the community. At CIS, one of our pillars of excellent education is understanding the privilege that comes with being an IB student and an international school student, and the importance of being global citizens. With this, comes the responsibility of being stewards of the communities that inhabit this world and the importance of giving back and being change makers!
