Language Certificates

Cologne International School – Internationale Friedensschule Köln – is an accredited examination centre for Cambridge (English), DELF (French), and DELE (Spanish) language certification. Under the guidance of a subject teacher, within the frame of a language class or extracurricular lesson, language certificate learners study to take language examinations, set forth by the relevant public institution. As an official testing centre, students have the advantage in most cases to sit their exams on campus, in a familiar environment, without the added stress of travelling to an unknown location.

These language diplomas are standardised, internationally recognized certificates, showing evidence of proficiency in the respective language. In many countries, language certificates can be submitted together with a high school degree to fulfill university admissions’ or job applications’ entry requirements for non-native speakers.

Cambridge English

We have been offering Cambridge English preparation courses for many years. While our students could choose to take any level exam course, from KET (A2/beginners) through to CPE (C2/proficient), they generally opt for the middle three levels, sitting the exams in the following grades:

  • PET (B1): grades 5-8
  • FCE (B2): grades 7-9
  • CAE (C1): grades 10-12 (this can be taken as a project course in the Gymnasium Oberstufe)

Our students have consistently enjoyed a very high success rate – scoring 12-15 points higher than the worldwide average – and tend to receive their language certificates at an earlier-than-average expected age. (In North Rhine Westphalia, the recommendations are: B1 – grades 8-10; B2 – grades 10-13; C1 – grades 11-13. More information can be found on the Cambridge English NRW project website)

The DELF (Diplôme D’études en Langue Française) French language diplomas, awarded by the French education ministry, include six levels in total. Four of these levels can be achieved at school – these are called DELF scolaire. Exams are taken in the following grades:

  • A1: grade 7
  • A2: grades 8-10
  • B1: grades 10 or 11
  • B2: grade 12

The DELF scolaire written exams are taken internally, at CIS/IFK; the oral exams take place externally, at an exam location designated by the Institut Français Köln.

Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera

Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE, Diplomas de Español Como Lengua Extranjera) are granted by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain. Two DELE exam levels are aimed at young learners: the A1 and the A2/B1 exam. Both of these exams are geared toward students aged 11-17, and we encourage students across our secondary school forms – regardless of their grade – to take the DELE exam at the appropriate time for them.

All components of the DELE language exams are carried out at our school; indeed we are the only official exam centre for “DELE A2 / B1 for Young Learners” in Cologne.
